Learn to surf with Sligo Surf Experience’s fun, structured five day surf camp for adults at Strandhill Beach, Ireland’s number one surfing beach. Meet your guide to the wild Atlantic waves, Seamus Mc Goldrick – a local surf coach and professional bodyboarder. Seamus and his friendly and engaging team of professional Irish Surfing instructors will help you progress from catching you first wave to finding your inner surfer.

 

Learn the ABCs of surfing and enjoy daily surf lessons tailored to your groups ability.  You will be provided with top of the range surfboards and bodyboards to try and super warm Tiki winter wetsuits for your structured five day surfing program.

 

After your daily surf lesson, Strandhill native Seamus Mc Goldrick will give you recommendations on the best local activities, experiences and attraction so you make the most out of your trip to Sligo.

Try the local cuisine and soak up the athmosphere of the authentic local traditional pubs. Reenergise after your surf sessions at a local bespoke yoga studio, Salt and Soul. Relax in a hot seaweed bath – a traditional Irish organic therapy – and learn all about the theraputic benefits of seaweed.

 

Hike up iconic Knocknarea Mountain to take in the panoramic view of Coolera Penninsula and the Atlantic Ocean. Visit the 5,000 year old neolithic tomb on the sacred summit of Knocknarea, which according to local legend is the grave of an ancient warrior Queen.

 

Experience the other activities Adventure Sligo has to offer and explore the area’s scenic looped walks and sample some of the local craft beers in the best local bars where you’ll also experience Sligo’s famous, world class live music scene.

Itinerary of the trip

Please note: the trip may take slightly longer than the itinerary states due to weather etc.

Day 1

Meet Sligo Surf Experience owner Seamus Mc Goldrick at his surf van at Strandhill Beach and get sized up for your wetsuit and surf boots that you will use for the week. After you get changed, your surf instructor will guide you to the beach and introduce you to your surfing equipment and give a brief talk on surf safety.

 

Learn the ABCs of surf technique and practice standing up on your board on the beach in one, two or three easy steps. Jump in the ocean and experience the thrill of catching your first wave.

 

In the afternoons, enjoy lunch in Shells Cafe or The Strand Bar or enjoy an evening meal in local restaurants like Stoked Restaurant or The Venue. Check out the regular live music sessions in Strandhill music hotspots like The Strand, The Venue or The Dunes Bar, which also does legendary burgers.

Day 2

Day 2 begins with a recap on the introductory surf lesson on day 1. Your surf instructor will answer any questions and patiently explain the three surf skills you need to master this week: lying on your board correctly, learning good paddle technique and catching waves and standing up on your board. Now it is time to jump in the ocean to practice what you have learned.

 

Go sightseeing and explore county Sligo by visiting Yeats Grave, Glencar Waterfall, Mullaghmore Head, Gleniff Horseshoe or the 5,000 year old megalithic site at the Carrowmore Tombs.

 

Visit Sligo Town and explore the Sligo Food trail or soak up some culture at Hawkswell Theatre or the towns numerous live music venues.

Day 3

Learn about the wind and tide at Strandhill Beach and how these factors effect the waves. Learn how to spot a dangerous rip current and what to do in an emergency. Improve your paddle technique so you can catch more waves.

 

Explore Strandhill’s excellent looped walks like the Queen Maeve Trail or the Killaspugbrone loop. Relax with a yoga session at Salt and Soul or a traditional Irish organic therapy at Voya Seaweed baths.

Day 4

Improve your surfing technique and learn how to surf a wave from waist deep water to the shore. Learn about the perfect surf stance onyour board on the beach and practice turning left and right on a wave.

 

Experience the other excellent adventure activities in Sligo. Go for a guided kayak tour on Sligo’s tranquil lakes or inland waterways, find out about the ancient history of Sligo by taking a guided walking tour. Try horseriding or rock climbing. You can visit Sligo’s Lough Gill to go stand up paddle boarding or the Ox Mountains to try mountain biking. Explore Sligo Bay with a local skipper or try sea angling and have your catch of the day cooked to order in a local restaurant.

 

There is a reason Sligo is known as Ireland’s adventure capital.

Day 5

Relax and enjoy your final surf experience on Strandhill Beach. The final day of our surf camp is all about having fun and participants will be encouraged to catch their best waves after four days of structured surf coaching.
